About this course
Overview
We prepare our students for math olympiads such as Math kangaroo ___ and ___. During this session kids will learn how to best analyze problems, master different methods, use problem-solving strategies, and learn to optimize time. We teach the most important skills to be successful in a math competition. Even if your child doesn’t plan to participate in a math competition, they often change their mind afer taking this course. This course brings students together to have fun while enhancing their mathematical abilities. We believe that the knowledge, skills, and tricks your child learns during the workshop will be highly advantageous.
About
Mathematical/ Academic Excellence
Competitions allow students to showcase their mathematical skills and talents. They encourage participants to strive for their best while challenging others.
Unfortunately students are often taught to memorize procedures, while gaining little insight into why these procedures work. If students forget a step in the algorithm, they can no longer work out a problem. Instead of memorizing algorithms, we focus on the underlying principles. Our aim is for our students to acquire a more in-depth, comprehensive understanding of the material.
Problem-Solving Skills
We are trying to teach logical reasoning and critical thinking at a very early age. It teaches how to analyze problems, break them down into manageable steps, and develop the best solutions.Math competitions often involve challenging problems that require creative and critical thinking. Participants learn to approach problems from different angles, in turn finding the best approach.
Love for Mathematics:
Engaging in competitions is a place for math-lovers to come together and have fun. Math competitions have unique and interesting problems that motivate students to explore mathematical concepts beyond their curriculum.
Visualizing word problems is key to solving new and unfamiliar problems. Drawing a bar model or making a table makes complex problems easy to solve. Throughout the curriculum, we introduce students to a variety of world problems such as rate, fractions, ratio, percentage, etc.
Community and Networking
Math competitions bring together like-minded individuals who share a passion for mathematics. Participants can meet other friends in their age-group with similar interests, creating opportunities for networking.
Our program includes dozens of geometric games, mindbenders, puzzles and construction sets. These manipulatives sometimes require students to mentally flip and rotate objects. Students learn to imagine objects from different perspectives.
Preparation for Higher Education:
Competitions foster a competitive environment where students come together to prepare for higher-education. Math competitions often cover advanced topics helping students take their skills to another level and be academically ready.
The studio’s program includes logic units in all grades. We emphasize creative solutions, and thinking “outside the box”. Students become experts at approaching new and difficult problems. They often brainstorm the solution together as a group, and learn to work as a team.
Recognition and Awards:
Achieving success in math competitions can lead to recognition and awards, which are a valuable asset for college and scholarship applications. In addition, these competitions will create memories that will last a lifetime.
Throughout the course, our students get plenty of practice drawing shapes, and using tools like rulers and protractors.
Math Kangaroo Preparation Classes
Dear Parents,
Many of you are familiar with the Math Kangaroo competition. The Studio of Engaging Math is offering Math Kangaroo preparation classes for all students grades 2 and up.
During the workshop, kids will learn how to analyze problems, master different methods, and use problem-solving strategies, practice writing timing tests, and know how to optimize time. That knowledge can be used in every math competition and not only there. Problem-solving is the most important skill which is used every day. Even if your child doesn’t participate in a competition this year, we believe that the knowledge, skills, and tricks your child gets during the workshop will be very helpful and beneficial.
During the course:
Workshops are 1.5 hours long
As the experience of past years has taught us, 1.5 hours fly by very quickly.
AMC-8 Preparation Classes
During the course, students will learn how to analyze problems, master different methods, and use problem-solving strategies. We will apply this knowledge to real problems from the AMC-8 competition. We will also teach them how to optimize their time during math competitions and will practice writing timed tests.
The program runs on Fridays every other week from 4:00 to 5:30 pm starting September 23th.
The cost of the program is $315.
If after a few classes you or your child decide that the program is not a good fit, the tuition will be prorated and credited to your account or refunded.
If your school doesn’t offer AMC-8, your child can participate in the competition through the studio.
